With world-leading expertise in optimization and simulation of quantum systems, as well as a rich network of academic and industry partners we are currently establishing a joint start-up company for the automatic manipulation and training of quantum computer devices. This venture is coordinated by our Peter Grünberg Institute – Quantum Control (PGI-8) and Peter Grünberg Institute – Quantum Computing Analytics (PGI-12). The project is funded by the Helmholtz Validation Fund and will officially launch in 2021. The PGI-8 specializes in novel optimal control strategies for emerging quantum technologies. We have pioneered methods for optimizing a wide range of target systems, including NV-centres, Bose-Einstein condensates, trapped ions, cold atoms, superconducting qubits, and quantum dots. Current research directions include tensor network methods, machine and reinforcement learning, in-situ optimal control, and quantum model reduction techniques. The PGI-12 specializes in detailed understanding of quantum devices at the software and firmware level. Methods for leakage suppression, low-power measurements, characterization and benchmarking, and implementation of NISQ-era quantum algorithms were pioneered here. Current research directions include overseeing the European-level project for a superconducting quantum computer prototype, and studying tradeoffs between digital and analog technologies.
